New Zealand have started the 2010 Tri Nations in great form with two wins over South Africa and they now sit nicely at the top of the table. The All Blacks are going to take some beating this year but the Aussies enter the tournament this weekend with the Australia v South Africa Odds at Brisbane taking centre stage. The Springboks are looking for a win after losing twice to the All Blacks while Australia look to get their campaign off to a winning start on home soil.
The All Blacks of New Zealand are now clear favourites according to the Tri-Nations Odds as they look to wrestle the title back from South Africa who were successful in 2009 and they have started the tournament well and top the Tri Nations Table.
It was confirmed this week that the Tri Nations will become the ‘Four Nations’ from 2012 with the inclusion of Argentina, so we are going to be seeing the tournament for this format just twice more including this year. The first of the Tri Nations Fixtures this year will see South Africa face New Zealand in Auckland it what looks an exciting start to the tournament on July 10th.
The Tri Nations is an international rugby union competition that is contested annually by Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The competition is organized by SANZAR, a consortium formed by the three countries’ rugby governing bodies – the Australian Rugby Union, the New Zealand Rugby Union and the South African Rugby Union. These three teams have dominated international rankings in recent years and some consider the Tri Nations to be the toughest competition in international rugby.
The Tri Nations will become the Four Nations in 2012 should the inclusion of Argentina as the fourth team go ahead. Argentina has been invited to join but there are a number of conditions that they have to fulfill.
The series is played on a home-and-away basis. From the first tournament in 1996 through 2005, the three teams played each other twice. Since then, each team has played the others three times, except in the Rugby World Cup year of 2007 when the series reverted to a double round-robin. Since the inception of the series the games played between Australia and New Zealand also go toward determining the winner of the Bledisloe Cup each year. The Freedom Cup is contested between New Zealand and South Africa, and the Mandela Challenge Plate between Australia and South Africa.
Tri Nations Background
The New Zealand All Blacks have dominated the Tri Nations series, winning the competition no fewer than eight times, including the inaugural event in 1996 and the past four championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Australia and South Africa have each won two Tri Nations Championships, with the last Wallabies victory coming back in 2001 and more recently the Springboks won the series in 2004. The Tri Nations 2008 results and final table of the 2008 season can be seen cy clicking the link .
The competition is traditionally played between the months of July to September each year this years Tri Nations 2010 fixtures can be seen here. Each team plays six fixtures in the series, playing the other two team three times. This was increased from each team playing four fixtures prior to 2006.
The increase is to accommodate the growing demand for the competition from television audiences not just in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa but from a growing interest in the competition from countries in the Northern Hemisphere such as the United Kingdom who have the Tri Nations Championship fixtures are played across all three countries.
With each of the teams playing three of their six games at home, coming up against one team twice and the other just once. The overall winner is determined by the team who comes out of their six match series with the most points, with four points awarded for a win and two points for a draw.
A bonus point is available if the winning team scores four or more tries in a game and the losing team is also eligible for the bonus point if the margin of defeat is seven points or fewer in addition to the bonus point if they have scored four tries and still lost.
The Tri Nations Championship Winners have never been decided by a tie breaker; however, if two of the teams finished with the same number of points in the competition the winner is determined by the team with the best tries scored/conceded points’ difference.
